Coppa Italia: Reigning Champs and Scudetto Kings Target the Final Four

Two places in the 2026 Coppa Italia are up for grabs this week when 2025 winners Bologna face Lazio on Wednesday and, before that, Serie A champions Napoli take on Como.

Atalanta and Inter Milan are already through to the semi-finals having recorded wins over Juventus and Torino, and the Coppa Italia 2026 betting odds say it will be Napoli and Bologna to join them; but neither of these two quarter finals ties will be a walkover, so let’s run the SBOTOP rule over the four teams.

Can Como upset the elite?

Since promotion to the top flight of Italian football in 2024, Cesc Fabregas’ Como have made quite a noise in Serie A, finishing tenth last term and pushing for a top six place this season. An absence of 21 years means Como are newcomers in the modern era but they are quickly becoming a force under the former Arsenal and Barcelona star. With three wins and a draw from the last four games I Lariani come into this clash in good form, also beating Fiorentina to reach the quarter finals. And with a player like 21 year old attacking midfielder Nico Paz in their ranks, Como always have a chance of causing an upset.

The Argentine star has scored eight goals and made six assists in Serie A this season; he bagged a goal in the 3-1 Coppa win over La Viola and had a goal chalked off in a 0-0 draw with Atalanta at the weekend, and Paz is sure to be in the midst of the Coppa Italia 2026 highlights in Naples on Tuesday.

I Partenopei have had a mixed bag of results but they pulled off a dramatic 3-2 win away to Genoa on Saturday as Rasmus Hojlund scored a brace, including a 95th minute winner from the penalty spot, while 2025 Player of the Year Scott McTominay was also on target. That made it back to back wins for Antonio Conte’s men and while they made hard work of their Round of 16 match, beating Calgliari in penalties, Napoli are six times Coppa Italia winners, the last occasion in 2020, and Napoli have been finalists a further four times.

In terms of recent form Napoli have won three, drawn one and lost two from their last six outings while Como have won three, drawn two and lost one. The hosts are favourites to win this tie at odds of 2.45, with Como at 3.05 and the Draw at 3.10, and I have my eye on a 2-1 home win at odds of 9.25.

Tough task for the champions

2025 Coppa winners Bologna beat Parma to reach the quarter finals, while Lazio beat 2025 finalists AC Milan and the two sides get together at the Renato Dall’Ara on Wednesday night. The hosts lost 1-0 at home to Parma on Sunday while Lazio were away to Juventus on, and Maurizio Sarri’s men picked up an impressive 2-2 draw; but it could have been much better as they led 2-0 and only conceded a leveller on 96 minutes. Lazio are unbeaten in three and have lost just once in six games, while Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna have lost their last four in the league while picking up a draw with Glasgow Celtic and a win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League.

I Rossoblu were toothless against Parma on Sunday and Italiano needs a talented attacking unit, which includes Riccardo Orsolini, Santiago Castro and Federico Bernardeschi in its ranks, to start firing again; Orsolini and Castro have scored seven and six goals in Serie A this season.

Bologna have won the Coppa Italia three times while Lazio have won it on seven occasions, last in 2019 and they have been finalists a further three times. And Sarri’s side has leapfrogged Bologna in the league recently, climbing up to eighth place and in European contention, while I Rossoblu have slipped down to tenth. Striker Pedro was on target in the draw with Juventus and, at 38 years he has bags of experience and cunning, while 24 year old Dane Gustav Isaksen, who also scored against the Old Lady, is growing in confidence week on week. At the other end of the pitch keeper Ivan Providel is a towering presence, in charge of his area and the Bologna front line will have to be at its best to breach his defence.

This is a tough game to call with Bologna at 3.05 to win on home soil, Lazio at 3.80 and the Draw at 3.30, and I think the reigning champions are in danger.
