VfB Stuttgart vs Bayern Munich
Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich meet Sebastian Hoeness’ VfB Stuttgart on Saturday to contest the DFL Supercup, the first chance to pick up silverware in Germany, and a showcase curtain-raiser for the new domestic campaign.
The traditional meeting of the Bundesliga champions and the DFB Pokal winners to contest the trophy has been going on for almost decades since it was founded in 1987 and renamed in honour of the great Franz Beckenbauer this year.
Kompany’s Bayern regained the Bundesliga title in May, as widely expected, while Stuttgart won their fourth DFB Pokal with a 4-2 victory over Arminia Bielefeld in May. The Bavarians begin their league campaign with a clash against title rivals RB Leipzig on Friday, August 22nd, while Die Schwaben kick off with a visit to Union Berlin a day later.
Both clubs have had a strong pre-season and would love to carry some momentum into the new campaign, so let’s see where the two teams sit right now.
Talking Points
More work for Bayern to do
After winning the Bundesliga title in his first season as Bayern manager, Kompany knows there will be more than one club snapping at the Bavarians’ heels. The Bundesliga 2025 betting odds clearly see the reigning champions as the team to beat. But Bayer Leverkusen certainly won’t go away, while Borussia Dortmund will be strong and RB Leipzig have a lighter workload than the other big guns after they finished seventh to miss out on European football for the first time since joining the top-flight in 2016.
The Bavarians have tried to strengthen in the summer, but so far, it hasn’t gone their way. They missed out on Florian Wirtz after the Germany star snubbed Munich to head to Liverpool, so the eventual transfer of Luis Diaz from Liverpool was greeted with some relief at the Allianz Arena. The Colombian winger will certainly strengthen Bayern’s creative muscle, but Kompany is still on the hunt for another goal-getter, with Harry Kane not getting any younger.

There has been a story rumbling in the Bundesliga 2025 news for many weeks, and that is the future of Stuttgart’s 6’6” striker Nick Woltemade, who has been a target for Bayern for some time.
As a side issue, it seems that Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are closing in on the signing of Bayern’s French forward Kingsley Coman. If that deal comes off quickly, then the Bavarians hope they will sign Woltemade before the end of the window at the beginning of September.
Bayern have made an offer of €60 million for the 23-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 28 appearances for Die Schwaben last term, and he picked up two caps for Germany. But at the time of writing, there is no new movement on this story.
Cup win puts VfB Stuttgart back on track
The second half of last season didn’t go to plan for Hoeness’ team, as they drifted to ninth in the table and quickly out of top four reckoning. But then, they plugged away in the DFB Pokal and were rewarded by a clash with Arminia Bielefeld, which they won 4-2 to end an 18-year trophy drought, and that qualified Die Schwaben for the Europa League.
Hoeness has been busy in the market, securing the services of French right-back Lorenz Assignon and a collection of high-quality youngsters in Lazar Jovanovic, Chema Andres, and Noah Darvich, and they are still in the hunt for talent to add to an already well-stocked squad.
Pre-season has been encouraging, as Stuttgart have beaten Fellbach 7-1 and Celta Vigo 2-1 before whacking French side Toulouse 6-0, with goals from the impressive Chris Fuhrich, Deniz Undav, and Ermerdin Demirovic, who bagged 15 goals last season.
Things are looking healthy for Stuttgart, and they will enter the new campaign full of confidence.
History
With 34 victories to seven, the Bavarians have bossed this relationship, and they did the double over Stuttgart last season with a 4-0 win in Munich followed by a 3-1 victory at the MHP Arena in February.
But in terms of recent form, Die Schwaben have won the last six, spanning pre-season and the end of last term, while Bayern have won four and lost two.
Betting Tip
Bayern are at SBOTOP odds of 1.52 to pick up the first silverware of the German campaign, with the draw at 4.20 and a Stuttgart surprise at 4.82. I suspect this will be an entertaining clash, and Hoeness’ team is in good shape, but I’m backing the Bavarians to win by the odd goal in three.
