Premier League: Can the Spurs Sustain Their Razor-Sharp Start?

Tottenham are off to a flying start under new head coach Thomas Frank, and they will stake their winning streak when they host Bournemouth in North London this Saturday afternoon. Following their UEFA Super Cup defeat against PSG, Spurs bounced back with a 3-0 win against Burnley and a 2-0 victory over Manchester City, taking one of the top spots in the Premier League standings.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth were beaten 4-2 by Liverpool on the opening matchday before narrowly defeating the 10-man Wolves 1-0. The Cherries are eliminated from the EFL Cup after losing 2-0 to Brentford yesterday, so they need a shot in the arm against the Spurs this weekend.

Strong start for Tottenham’s stars

Many wondered how Tottenham’s attack would look after Son Heung-Min left the team for good this season to join LAFC, and Brennan Johnson, among others, has answered the call thus far. The 24-year-old forward has scored two goals in two games for the Spurs this term and is currently one of only two players to have found the back of the net in back-to-back matches. 

Richarlison also has two goals after scoring a brace against Burnley, and midfielder Joao Palhinha scored his first goal for the team against Manchester City last weekend. The Brazilian striker won Player of the Week honours in matchday one, while Palhinha won the award in matchday two. Mohammed Kudus also warrants a shoutout for supplying two assists on his debut against the Clarets.

Tottenham also deserve plaudits for their seemingly impenetrable defence after securing back-to-back clean sheets. Defender Cristian Romero has been a commanding presence at centre-half, alongside Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario looks steadier between the sticks compared to last season.

The Spurs will continue to miss the services of Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin, and Yves Bissouma due to injuries. However, they should have enough to see the Bournemouth game through, based on their current form.

 

Bournemouth are compromised at the back

Bournemouth’s defence figures to be in for a long day against Tottenham, and it doesn’t help that they will miss one of their backline starters. Right-back Julian Araujo is suspended this weekend after picking up two yellow cards in the team’s 2-0 EFL Cup loss against Bournemouth, meaning he’ll delay his Premier League season debut for at least another week. Team captain Adam Smith will likely take the Mexican international’s place against the Spurs.

Andoni Iraola’s men have already conceded seven goals in their previous three games across all competitions, and this was expected because of their huge player departures this summer. However, the same shouldn’t be said in the final third, especially since Antoine Semenyo has carried over his form from last season, scoring two league goals already.

Bournemouth are undefeated in their last six Premier League away matches in London (W1, D5) and are gunning for consecutive such top-flight away wins for the first time since 2018.
