Serie A: Sassuolo Visit Could Temporarily Distract AS Roma

AS Roma’s home misery continues following last night’s 2-1 loss against Viktoria Plzen, so Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are not in a good mood when they head to the Mapei Stadium to face Sassuolo for their next Serie A match this Sunday.

I Giallorossi have dropped further in the Europa League table, and they cannot afford to do the same in Italy. AS Roma were once in the Top 2 after a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign. Sassuolo will rely on the vets

After a slow start to the season, Sassuolo have gradually improved their form over the past few weeks, with wins over Lazio (1-0), Udinese (3-1), and Hellas Verona (1-0), as well as a goalless draw against Lecce. And the next thing you know, I Neroverdi are in the thick of the European football race, a marked improvement from where they were last year.

During their undefeated run, head coach Fabio Grosso has stuck with his ol’ reliables, and the newcomers have also acclimated well within the squad. Alieu Fadera and Ismael Kone have opened their accounts, while Armand Lauriente, Edoardo Iannoni, and Andrea Pinamonti also found the back of the net. Domenico Berardi, who has not yet scored, leads the team with two assists.

Sassuolo’s midfield looks steadier this season, following the surprise addition of Nemanja Matic. The 37-year-old has formed a solid partnership with Kone, Aster Vranckx, and Kristian Thorsvedt.

The good news for I Neroverdi is that they have passed the grueling part of their schedule. After the AS Roma match, they have winnable matches against Cagliari, Genoa, Atalanta, Pisa, Como, and Fiorentina before they face the league leaders, AC Milan, in mid-December.

 

AS Roma’s centre-forwards are misfiring

Gian Piero Gasperini is known for his high-octane style of football, but his aggressive attacking philosophy has yet to be fully imbibed by his team. Despite having scored only seven goals this term, I Giallorossi are among the top teams in Italy.

Midfielder Matias Soule leads I Giallorossi with three goals and two assists, but his forwards have yet to follow suit. Artem Dovbyk only has one goal so far, level with Bryan Cristante, Wesley Franca, and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Evan Ferguson has yet to score his first AS Roma goal, and he has come under scrutiny, considering his form with the Ireland national team, having found the back of the net three times in September and October.

 

History

Sassuolo, who were in Serie A for 11 consecutive years, were demoted to Serie B after finishing 19th in the standings during the 2023-24 campaign. Last season, I Neroverdi secured their promotion to the Italian top-flight by finishing at the top of the second division table with 82 points. Sassuolo’s 3-1 win over Modena in April sealed the deal with five rounds to spare.

AS Roma completed a league double over Sassuolo the last time these two teams were in the Italian top-flight. I Giallorossi won 2-1 at the Mapei Stadium under Jose Mourinho and won 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Stadio Olimpico under Daniele De Rossi. Before this, Sassuolo won 4-3 against AS Roma in March 2023. 

As mentioned, AS Roma suffered their third consecutive home loss last night across all competitions. This hasn’t happened since April 2011 under Vincenzo Montella.
